As we kick off March Madness let’s take a look back at the biggest upsets in history. Every year there are a few teams that step up and beat the favored school to take the title of “Cinderella”. Some years have minimal upsets and then you have the improbable run of George Mason to the Final Four. Here is our list of the top upsets in recent NCAA tournament history:
· 1983 - #1 University of Houston vs #6 North Carolina State – Clyde Drexler and Phi Slamma Jamma vs Jimmy V and Dereck Whittenburg – What a finish!
· 1985 - #1 Georgetown vs #8 Villanova – Patrick Ewing and team were on a tear through the tournament until Villanova shot a record 78% from the field to win by 2 points.
· 1991 - #2 Syracuse vs #15 Richmond – Syracuse had been a dominant team for several years but trailed most of the game and eventually lost after getting within one with less than a minute.
· 1996 - #4 UCLA vs #13 Princeton – UCLA was the defending national champion and led by seven points with six minutes to go and then were shut down by Princeton.
· 2001 - #2 Iowa State vs #15 Hampton – Iowa State had made it to the Elite Eight the previous year only to lose to Hampton after leading most of the game.
