Most Popular Banned Books of All Time

Category: Best List | Best of | facts | Tips | Top 5 | triviaThe List Ninja @ 05:22

How much has the world changed in the last few decades?  We are all much less sensitive to violence, profanity and sexual situations.  The introduction of TV into our daily lives has made an incredible shift in our culture.  Some homes and businesses feel like they have an LCD TV in every room with 24 hour news channels covering every event in ridiculous detail.  Not that long ago, we banned books that were somewhat offensive. Today those same books would be NY Times Bestsellers if they are surrounded by controversy.  Let’s review some of the most popular banned books of the past 50 years.

ü  To Kill A Mockingbird – Published in 1960 and banned by many school districts in the 1960’s and 1970’s

ü  Adventures of Huckleberry Finn – Published in 1855 and has been removed and challenged even until the 1990’s due to language

ü  The Catcher in the Rye – Published in 1951 and was challenged and censored from the 1960’s even through the 1980’s

ü  Lord of the Flies – published in 1954 and challenged by library and school systems for several decades

ü  Slaughterhouse Five – published in 1969 and immediately challenged due its graphic nature.

Banning books is never good in a country based on essential freedoms like free speech. The Harry Potter series has even made of few of the banned book lists.
