5 things to know about The Last Airbender

Will you be lined up to see the M. Night Shyamalan’s version of The Last Airbender when it hits the theaters?  The movie is based on the popular Nickelodeon cartoon – Avatar: The Last Airbender.  The show follows the plight of a young man that was born to maintain the balance of peace in the world. Will The Last Airbender be the Best Movie of 2010? Here are a few things to know before you see the movie:

Ø  The Avatar is the only person in his generation capable of manipulating all four elements to his will and the one tasked with maintaining peace between the Four Nations of the world

Ø  Ang, the main character and Avatar, is a 12 year old that has been frozen for 100 years to wake up to find the Fire Nation

Ø  The Four Nations: the Water Tribes, the Earth Kingdom, the Air Nomads, and the Fire Nation

Ø  Despite the many Asian influences, the original Avatar cartoon is not considered Anime since it was created in the USA

Ø  The movie was originally titled Avatar: The Last Airbender but was changed due to possible confusion with James Cameron’s Avatar

Will this be the triumphant return of M. Night Shyamalan?  Let’s hope so.

Is stress and anxiety keeping you from being your best?  The anxiety of tomorrow can be taxing for most.  The leading cause of stress is money but we still continue to go shopping for deals.  There are studies that show that 3 of 7 drink a glass of wine to take the edge off.  Having your beverage of choice should not be a tool to relieve stress in the ideal world.  Here are a few things you should know about stress and anxiety:

ü  Over 24% of people feel like their stress level is an 8 on a scale up to 10

ü  39% feel anxiety about paying all of their bills on monthly basis

ü  The number of people that check their e-mail of vacation is 38%

ü  Loss of sleep due to anxiety is a leading contributor to stress

ü  37% feel significant holiday stress

Knowing the causes does not always stop stress but it can help address the issue.  So make sure you get enough sleep and exercise in order to make sure that you physically and mentally prepared to take on the world.

Is Cinco de Mayo just an excuse to go grab a Margarita with friends?  Sounds like a good excuse to us.  Many believe that Cinco de Mayo is the equivalent of the United States 4th of July.  Let’s take a minute to list a few key facts about the holiday so that you can amaze your friends over chips and salsa.

ü  Cinco de Mayo is not Mexico’s Independence Day

ü  Cinco de Mayo is a celebration of the victory in 1862 over France’s Napolian III

ü  Mexican Independence day is September 16th to celebrate independence from Spain in 1810

ü  Cinco de Mayo is bigger in the United States than in Mexico – Mexico has many similar holidays

ü  The Margarita was not “invented” until about 1930 –What did they do before that?

Are you in a “Save the World” mood?  April 22nd, 2010 marks the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.  Earth Day typically marks the one day that we raise awareness of issues that affect Mother Earth.   So over the next year as you book your next trip on the best travel websites and look down from the airplane, keep in mind that everything we do starts a small chain reaction in the environment.  Here are a few bits of trivia about Earth Day:

·         Started in 1970 by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson to focus on environmental issues

·         On Earth Day 20 in 1990 over 200 million people participated

·         China, Russia and the USA had representatives at Mt. Everest to partner on climbing as a team at Earth Day 20

·         Originally many thought that April 22nd was chosen due to being Vladimir Lenin’s birthday

·         Senator Nelson shared that April 22nd was also St. Francis of Assisi’s birthday and is considered the world’s first environmentalist.

How much do you know about Tiger Woods?

Love or hate him – Tiger Woods can play golf.  Before the scandal hit, he was a very private individual.  He even owns a yacht named Privacy that reportedly has room to house 21 people.  As we watch Tiger’s return for his bid to be the Best Golfer of All Time.  Here are a few random things to know about Tiger Woods:

·         Tiger has 3 half siblings - Earl Jr., and Kevin, and one half-sister, Royce from his dad’s first marriage.

·         Elin Nordegren Woods was a former Swedish model and au pair.  They were introduced by Jesper Parnevik.

·         Tiger Woods donated $3,000,000 to relief efforts in Haiti.

·         The “Tiger” nickname came from a nickname Earl Woods had given to a Vietnamese soldier buddy.

·         Tiger Woods was the highest paid athlete in 2008 making approximately $110 million in winnings and endorsements.

The discussion of Tiger Woods brings out many different opinions and emotions but whatever your position on Mr. Woods, he definitely makes golf more interesting.

Strong is the new Beautiful – as the shirt says.  More and more women are working out and getting into shape.  Classes at your local fitness center range from Spinning (going really fast on a stationary bike) to Pilates (Athletic Yoga) to Sculpting (weights with cardio).  There is something for everyone.  So before you go out and buy a Top Ranked Treadmill so you can look like a Top Female Tennis Player, check out this list of stats about the average woman that works out:

Health Care Reform: 5 Things to Know about the Bill

Some are for, some are against, most are confused.  In an article on CNN, they attempt to clarify a few key points about the Health Care Reform bill.  More articles can be found our list of the Best News Blogs.  But first let’s take a moment to review the Health Care Reform bill and this list of things to know:

  • Young people can remain on parents' insurance until age 26
  • Health care reform legislation has some benefits, but also disadvantages, for seniors

·         If you don't get insurance from your employer, that might change

·         Health insurance companies can't discriminate against you because you have a pre-existing condition.

·         The health care reform legislation has some benefits for senior citizens, but it might have some disadvantages as well.
